Katerini - enjoy the flair of this city!

Katerini is the capital city of the administrative district Pierias, in which Makrigialos is located. A modern city of 43,600 inhabitants, it has lots of shops and stores and a beautiful pedestrian mall.

Katerini is not right on the sea, which is why there is no major tourism there. The tourists cavort in the bathing resort Paralia Katerinis. Nevertheless you find a buzz of activity in Katerini. The traffic pulses through the alleyways and streets and can make an inexperienced driver break out in a sweat. In the pedestrian mall things move at a more leisurely pace.

Here you can sit in one of the numerous street cafés sipping a nescafe frapé (Greek national drink), or idle through the fashionable shops.

But for those who are looking for the authentic, who want to see behind the curtain, the road less travelled must be taken: start an expedition with a tiny shop, whose little treasures are not always obvious at first glance. You find exquisite fruit and vegetable shops, shops with housewares in which you can barely turn around, olives of many different varieties and preparations, olive oil, spices, candy stores that make you think of the land of Cockaigne, little bars that sell fresh Buratza in the morning (a delicious puff pastry, filled with vanilla creme or Feta or mincemeat). There are so many more things awaiting the perceptive visitor than we can list here.

The weekly market of Katerini is a special event which takes place every Saturday morning. This market still has a great importance for local people. Here you stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, the finest spices, housewares, clothes, plants, living poultry, chicken and just about everything needed for daily life.
